If I download the specimen picture in the zoomable window by right clicking on it, it comes through as a complete, small png when it is reduced, but if I zoom in, it downloads a 256x256px segment of the picture. Perhaps could we put the ‘download’ button into the specimen browser, or provide some user instructions or guidance on how to download the picture in the images section?
This would also require the licence information to be displayed, so I'll link that issue.

That's great, thanks. Once we get the licensing metadata sorted out (#8), perhaps we can re-visit how to display the licence for users wanting to download.
Have you seen the way the CSIRO Images portal handles alerting the downloading user to the licence? Quite simple and sensible, I think. Posting it here as food for thought: http://www.scienceimage.csiro.au/
