Unschooling in Austria

Homeschooling is a legal form of schooling
It requires no prior authorisation
It can be curriculum-free

Context

According to the Schulpflichtgesetz :

§ 11. (1) Notwithstanding § 12, general compulsory education can also be fulfilled by attending classes at a private school without public status, provided that the classes are at least equivalent to those at a school named in § 5.

(2) Compulsory schooling can also be fulfilled by attending home tuition, provided that the tuition is at least equivalent to that at a school named in Section 5 - with the exception of the polytechnic school. (BGBl. No. 322/1975, Art. IZ 19)

(3) The parents or other legal guardians must notify the district school board before the beginning of the school year that their child is taking part in a lesson mentioned in paragraph 1 or 2. The district school board can prohibit participation in such a lesson within one month of receipt of the notification if there is a high probability that the lesson does not have the equivalence required in paragraph 1 or 2. An appeal to the regional school board can be lodged against the decision of the district school board; No ordinary legal remedy is permissible against the decision of the regional school board.
